Directors Albert Band and Charles Band had originally conceived this film as an adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange, for which they had obtained the license from Marvel Entertainment.
However, the pre-production phase took so long that by the time filming started, they lost the rights to the name. Instead of scrapping the film altogether, the script was rewritten into an R-rated standalone film.
An unspeakable evil has come into our dimension and wants to rule over Earth, and only a mysterious sorceror known as Doctor Mordrid can stop him.
